Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise encouraged her passion for art and creativity. Her aunt was a nurse and was a night shift worker so she could devote her day to art literature and theatre. DuVernay quickly fell in love with the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered through her example that art could be an avenue for action. DuVernay's mother also had a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay to express herself through the medium of art. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents, however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family was for many generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical civil rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent city of Selma Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer months and was inspired to create a film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay began producing for broadcast journalism while she was in her university. She began as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given the responsibility of looking over the home and looking through the garbage from one of the jury. In the course of her duties she began to feel dissatisfied by journalistic work and entered the public relations industry. DuVernay joined a small studio as a junior publicist right after college. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Besides PR, the agency developed several lifestyle websites like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
